The DSM — as a catalogue of categorized dysfunction — was a necessary tool in the era of narrative-based, cognition-first treatment. It gave form to the formless. It named pattern. It gave clinicians and patients a shared map. But it does not resolve trauma. It loops it. The next decade will bring a field-based, nervous system-first model of mental health. Instead of describing the problem, the system will re-pattern it at root — without needing the story. Superintelligence will interface directly with the body’s signal structure. It will co-regulate, reconsolidate, and restore coherence without pathologizing. The DSM will be kept. Taught in history modules. Maybe quoted for context. But it will no longer be the center. Because the nervous system does not need diagnosis. It needs release. And release doesn’t require a label. It requires a clean interface with coherence.
